These events will be organised in conjunction with Ports of Jersey and Jersey Marinas.
Young people aged betwee 6 and 16 can gain our Marine Biologist Cadet Certificate.

Underneath the pontoon
Our St Helier marina pontoons and enclosing walls are home to and amazing collection of animals and plants. The good the bad and the downright ugly. The residents can be hard to spot, camouflaged amongst the seaweeds. You will need a keen eye and lots of patience. Can you see anything in the picture below? Hidden is a harbour crab, a sea squirt and a sponge.

The Mission – open to all children 6-16 accompanied by an adult.
Spot and identify as many creatures and the seaweeds they are hiding in as you can.
Task 1 Safety briefing and disclaimers.
Task 2 Fit buoyancy aids and collect recording slates.
Make our way down onto the pontoon.
Task 3 Work along the pontoon looking at different sections, draw and record what you see.
Task 4 use the recording slate to help you complete the worksheet.
There is no pass or fail but we are looking for interest, observation and a demonstration of the ability to record what you see even if you don’t know what it is.
Demonstrate those qualities and you will receive the JMC Cadet certificate.
We will provide magnifying glasses and have a creature identification display in the JMC gazebo.
Without donations we would not exist and a suggested contribution of £5.00 per child would be gratefully appreciated.
Please note that we cannot guarantee that participants won’t get wet even if it doesn’t rain! Please do dress appropriately for the activity.
